Loss of Signature Traits

Harris’s signature traits become lost or deeply hidden when he is experimenting with a style of painting. Two excellent examples from this period are these tonal pieces.

The underpainting is almost impossible to recognize, his broad brush strokes have limited use, there is no discernible impasto or Segantini stiches, purple is gone or so limited as to be almost invisible, and no foreground to background painting. In The Gas Works the chimney smoke (light purple) is painted over the background, yet in Shacks the chimney smoke was painted before the sky. In The Drive the horizon actually touches and even overlaps the sky.
